Fixing the CentOS 4.X Audio Devices (udev) Problem

IRLP - Keeping the Radio
in Amateur Radio |
A recent update to the Operating System by CentOS has caused a
problem with the permissions for the IRLP process to use the sound card and mixer.
The node will not work after its first reboot, and the problem is characteristic of a
short keyup with no audio when the node is rebooted. You will also see the error
"AUDIO DEVICES NOT SET CORRECT".
You may also be receiving email messages sent from your node that are warning you
of a pending problem. This is becuase we can detect the problem with updates,
but we are unable to remotely update your system as special user permissions are
required. The problem only occurs after the first reboot.
The problem is the "udev" process was updated by a recent CentOS update, and a file
that was customized for IRLP during the install is now overwritten. This file set the
permissions for the audio devices from their defaults so that the IRLP processes
can run without superuser (root) permissions.
In order to fix the problem, node owners must run a custom script as user root
to fix the problem.
The script was recently provided to every node as a script update, so you can
login to your node as root and run the fix by typing:
/home/irlp/scripts/fix-udev
If the above method does not work, you can also log in as root and run the
following commands:
ncftpget ftp://irlp.net/fix-udev
sh ./fix-udev
The fix will allow your node to work without a reboot, but the node needs to be
rebooted before the fix will fully apply.
If this does not fix the problem, you will have to contact installs@irlp.net
with your issues and login information, and we will help get your node working
again.
